Abstract

This chapter presents a series of concepts and practices pertaining to the educational inclusion of students with severe and multiple disabilities in general education classrooms. It describes some of the legal foundations, the ways our society approaches human differences, and compares more traditional educational approaches to inclusive ones.It culminates by sharing seven key lessons learned about inclusive education based on the professional literature and the direct experiences of authors.
