Abstract

In 2022 and 2023, the University of Vermont Extension Northwest Crops and Soils Program initiated two trials evaluating forage yield and quality of an array of cool season perennial grass species and varieties planted in monocultures as well as a few pre-made mixtures. The grass species selected were festulolium, meadow brome, meadow fescue, orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue. Monitoring these stands over multiple years can help evaluate yield, quality, survivability, pest resistance, persistence, and other characteristics of these species and varieties to identify the most suitable forage species and varieties in our region over a variety of weather conditions.
