Daily oral consumption of probiotic B. subtilis (R0179) is necessary for continuous presence in the gastrointestinal tract

Abstract
We have previously found that the tryptophan-metabolizing B. subtilis strain, R0179, enhances colonic motility. In the current experiment, we hypothesized that R0179 does not colonize and can only exert its prokinetic effects via repeated administration. Control mice were treated with saline, and experimental mice were treated with R0179. Fecal samples and cecum content were both collected at five different time points and examined for the presence of the bacteria. R0179 DNA was only abundant for 6 to 24 hours, supporting the hypothesis that repeated administration of probiotic R0179 is necessary for its continuous presence in the colon.
